Brockley Max festival 2011: film nights

The Brockley Max, our local community festival, will run from 27 May to 4 June for its eleventh year, offering a wide range of cultural events. Two film-related events will take place:

Tuesday 31 May at 8pm: screening of Loving Hands, “a film about inspirational South London community leader & long term Brockley resident Dame Sybil Phoenix (above) charting Sybil’s life from her arrival from the Caribbean in the early 60s, to her struggles with the National Front & her constant advocacy on behalf of the Afro-Caribbean community.” Read more

Friday 3 June at 7.30pm: Brockleywood Nights, “a selection of locally made short films, crossing all genres and showcasing the many talents of people who live around the corner from you.” £4/£3 concs. Read more

3rd Fashion in Film Festival in Lewisham

The 3rd Fashion in Film Festival is taking place across London between 1-12 December, “a major extravaganza in costume spectacle, dance and diabolical glamour”. Two events will happen in Lewisham:

London’s cinema history
Tuesday 16 November, 8-9.30pm, Lewisham Library. Free event.
Inga Fraser from the Fashion In Film Festival and Anne-Marie Fahy, Blue Badge Guide, will speak about local cinema history and the common ground shared between fashion and film.

Lewisham library kinoscope
Until Sun 28 November, library opening times, Lewisham Library. Free event.
Visit one of Fashion In Film Festival’s kinoscope peephole machines, which enable you to witness clips of costume and cinema history from the early 1900s with a local twist, all brought to life through lavish choreography and technical wizardry.

Nollywood Now: Nigerian Film Festival

Like London buses! Within a month, South East London is blessed with its second film festival. This time, Nigerian cinema is being celebrated with UK’s first ever festival of Nigerian film, Nollywood Now. The event runs from 6-12 October and screenings take place at the Deptford Town Hall.

Film studies in Brockley

One of our members has drawn our attention to a film studies course held locally at the Brockley Rise Centre. She told us that the courses are well prepared, very informative and fun. Each class includes an introduction, a film and a discussion… down at the pub! This year, two courses are on offer: Guilt & Amorality (starting 22 September 2010) and Films by Women Directors (starting 19 January 2011). Link to the prospectus

Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festivals

For the first time, a number of free film events will take place in Peckham and Nunhead, between September 5th and 12th. It will be a great opportunity to see a variety of films (Nosferatu, The Blues Brothers, A Matter of Life and Death, Koyaanisqatsi…) in some unusual venues, including the historic Nunhead Cemetery, the Centre for Wildlife Gardening and the Peckham multi-storey car park roof. A guided walk of SE15′s lost cinemas will also take place on Monday 6 September at 8pm.

Cinema al fresco

While we’re away, our comrades from Gallery Film in Dulwich will hold an outdoor screening of Hairspray on Monday 30 August from 6.30pm (film at 8pm) in the magnificent gardens of the the Dulwich Picture Gallery, with free hair styling, free gifts, dancing lessons, etc… “Put on your hairspray, dancing shoes and bobby socks and spend the night rocking and rolling to the rhythms of 1962…”

Fashion on film

Celebrating London Fashion Week and Lewisham’s own creative design community, the Lewisham Film Initiative is screening Brit Chic: Fashion on Fil m 1946-1989, “a kaleidoscopic survey of post-war sartorial trendsetters from couture to high street”. The event is on Tuesday 16 February from 6.30PM at the Rivoli Ballroom. You will also be able to admire (and buy) our local fashion designers’ latest wares. More information here.
